Monday Jan 22, 2006

Hello my favourite students!

Only three classes until the exam! Tonight you have to read Pages 242 and 251 about human conception and development.

Also there is a reproduction test on Wednesday. You should be studying for one half hour every night for the exam. Speaking of the exam it is Monday Jan 29, 2007 at 9 am in room 221 and you need to bring your text book. I will send you to get your textbook before allowing you to write your exam. If you do not hand in the correct textbook number I will not issue a grade for the 9 Science class until I recieve the correct text book or a payment of $90.

Happy Studying!

Couldn't Pass It Up

I just could pass up the opportunity to post such a funny joke. I laughed, and laughed and laughed...I'm still laughing.

Mitosis Web Sites

Ahh, my wonderful students...Asking me to put information on the blog is fabulous! I love it! You can use any search engine and type in the words "phases or mitosis" and you'll find many wonderful sites with tons of information.

Remember, my little stem cells, you are just doing the basic functions of each stage, I would never expect you to know all the subphases and super detailed information.

Terms we talked about today that you will need to know (I believe some of these are on your vocabulary list already):

  1. Interphase
  2. Prophase
  3. Metaphase
  4. Anaphase
  5. Telophase
  6. Interphase
  7. Centriole
  8. Centromere
  9. Cytokenisis
  10. Spindle fibers

For your quiz, test and exam you will need to be able to the following things:

  1. Explain why cell division is important
  2. Know all the phases (in order)
  3. Know what happens in each phase.
  4. Be able to identify pictures of each phase.
  5. Difference between plant and animal cell mitosis.

Ok, the moment you all have been waiting for, THE WEB SITES:

  1. http://www.cellsalive.com/mitosis.htm - this is site with the animation of mitosis. Also if you look on the right hand side tool bar you will find cell models, meiosis, cell cycle. Look around the web site... It is one of the best out there.
  2. http://biology.nebrwesleyan.edu/benham/mitosis/ - this is the page has the pictures of plant and animal cells in different phases of mitosis.
  3. http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio/tutorials/cell_cycle/main.html - this a great site for great information. We will be using this site tomorrow in class.

Now a challenge to all you who are still checking the blog. I am looking for more GREAT websites about cellular division. If you find any, make sure you post them to share with your classmates and myself.

Another challenge to all you bloggers: I am running out of cartoons for science. In your search for the websites, if you come across a good Science joke or cartoon please add it to the blog.

Happy Bloging

Bad Batteries

Hey Folks,

I finally figured out what was wrong with the lack of effort in Science class. You have bad batteries, hopefully you can change them in order to get your bulb burning brighter.

I was so very impressed today with almost ALL of my fabulous students having their pre-lab reports completed. Woo Hoo! So what are the chances that everyone will hand in their lab report next Tuesday and have their pre-lab for 10.6 done? A girl can dream, can't she?

Ok, so report cards went home today. Yes that is right you have your mid term marks in your hands. Remember that this is only the mid term ... not the end of the world. You still have time to pull up your grades for the end of the term.

Lab 10.1 is due Tuesday Nov 28, 2006

Pre-lab 10.6 is also on Tuesday Nov 28, 2006.

Tomorrow in class we are having a guest come in (Ms. Roberts) to help us develop strategies we can use to better understand our textbook and the understanding concept questions. I promise that everyone will get something out of this. So come to class with an open mind!

Ok, I am signing off. Don't forget to change your batteries and rev those engines!

Dance Party Friday Postponed...

It must have been fate. Friday I was pretty upset by the lack of effort being put into your Science class and I wrote a huge Blog about how frustrated I was but as fate would have it I couldn't post it due to a problem on the site. Maybe that is someone's way of saying my blog was too harsh.

I had asked on Friday that you take some time over the weekend and think about ways that you and I can improve what we do here in Science class. Only one person responded. Wow I must be doing a fabulous job:)
As a reward for giving feed back I am adding 5 bonus points to your quiz mark.

Alas, I really would like to see everyone make an real effort to improve their Science grade. We all have room for improvement, (yes, even me). So if you wish to still give feed back on what we can do (or I can do) to help you be more successful...BLOG IT.

Enough with the complaining and lets move on! We have so much to do this week!

1) Tuesday Nov 21, 2006 - Pre-lab 10.1 in room 203. On your page 4 include step 11 (but do not do step 12), understanding concepts 1 and 2 and PLEASE don't forget to do your conclusion.

2) All overdue assignments are to be handed in Nov 22, 2006. I will be sending a progress report home at the end of NOVEMBER and I would like everyone to have no missing assignments.

3) Hey guess what...no school Thursday afternoon and all day Friday. Woo Hoo! But don't worry you'll have homework to make up for missing class time:)

4) Tuesday Nov 28, 2006 there will be another lab. Lab 10.6 so have your pre-lab done for this day.

I think that is all for now. There is not too much time left for this unit so you can expect a test in the next two weeks (or so). Study hard, ask questions, and complete your labs.

Have fun, stay out of trouble and happy blogging.

Another Blogger Bites the dust...

Ahh yes...the crazy old teacher is just allowed to ramble on again about how I really wish that my students would take the task of learning to another level. You are all willing to the minimum but are capable of so much more than that. I am watching you do your labs and all I see is a bunch of great people doing mediocre work. The lab is partially done and no one really knows what is going on.

Some one just said there are TOO MANY BIG WORDS in step eight. Nothing else just too many big words...What is a teacher to do? What can I do? What do you want me to do?

I think my mind is lost. We are half way through the electricity unit and I would how many of you will remember anything we did. Especially on the fateful day of the final exam. I am expecting tears when the final marks are in and some have not finished their goal.

So in conclusion to all my rambling I think we should have a quiz rather than a lab (with too many pictures and big words) this Wednesday Nov 15, 2006.

Cheers for now. Happy Blogging study hard and don't forget to accept the challenge of learning in every aspect of your life.
